Dear Friends,
It’s been a while since we’ve shared a mailing like this. But this year we want you to know about our commitment, and the progress made since the last time you heard from us.
Our son, David, has now had Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) for two-thirds of his life. And during that time we have participated in walks, rides and galas to fund research that would make life better for him and many others. And it has. The daily regimen has improved in leaps and bounds, and David has tools to manage his care right at his finger tips, literally, that may not have been possible but for the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
At this year’s Lights! Camera! Cure! Gala, Cindy and I will be honored with the Living and Giving Award. This award is presented to those who have dedicated themselves to the work of JDRF, and who have made a difference in doing so. I’m very proud to be included in this, but I have to tell you that much of our work as a family has been Cindy’s doing.
I rode Death Valley and Austin, Texas Rides. We have walked in Greensboro, NC, Greenville, SC and in neighborhoods with other families. And we’ve enjoyed the bidding at Galas that funded research. Cindy served as Executive Director as a founding member of the local JDRF Chapter, and then as National Director of the Ride to Cure Diabetes. She also led the charge to find and hire a pediatric endocrinologist for our community. A campaign that led to the hiring of now 3 pediatric endocrinologists and the establishment of a practice that cares for more than 2,000 kids with T1D. The GHS Pediatric Endocrinology Practice will be honored alongside us on March 25th. We’re proud to share the stage with the doctors who have given such amazing care to our kids across the Upstate.
Cindy and I believe JDRF is the organization that will best steward our financial resources and drive the research that will discover the cure and, until the cure is found, will better the lives of the estimated 1.25 million Americans living with T1D. We’ve seen the work they do, and we’ve witnessed the improvement in care until the cure is found.
Please make a Fund A Cure gift toward our campaign. 100% is tax deductible. And we’ll be proud to share another collective effort that surely will advance the work being done. We both would love to be able to celebrate a cure for David not in his lifetime, but in OURS.
